"I tried and I gave up." - Trent Reznor
I've completely given up on this country, it's people, and it's entire government. It's all just a hopeless farce to me. Hopeless in the worst sense of the word, to be honest.
This past week's midterm elections have gotten me so depressed, it's not even remotely funny. The last time I felt this horrible was, in fact, when I was thirteen years old; the day of John Kerry's defeat to the likes of our nation's unanimously worst commander-in-chief: George W. Bush.
I just don't understand it. And by it, I mean the constant and utter blindness of today's Americans. By far, I've become entirely convinced that people truly wouldn't acknowledge evil unless it literally had horns sticking out of it's forehead.
The only analogy that I've been able to come up with over this past week was as such: The American masses are the equivalent to a naïve girl who repeatedly runs back to an abusive boyfriend in hopes of him changing. Think I'm kidding?
In eight years of Republican control from 2001 to 2009, we saw....
1. The Republican party turn an economic surplus that was left over from the Clinton administration turned into a trillion dollar deficit which plunged us into the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.
2. The worst attack ever seen on U.S. soil in the form of the September 11th terrorist attacks which ended in over 3,000 civilian deaths.
3. A Republican-controlled congress pass The Patriot Act in 2001 which currently allows the government to wiretap, hack, and invade the privacy of any American citizen without a warrant; effectively stripping away every American of their constitutional civil liberties.
4. A Republican-controlled congress defeat a bill in 2006 that would've provided now-ill former recovery workers from Ground Zero additional medical benefits for themselves and their families.
5. The re-deployment of U.S. armed forces from Afghanistan to Iraq in 2003 in search of still-unrecovered "weapons of mass destruction" that resulted in the deaths of over 5,000 U.S. soldiers and severely wounded approximately 30,000 more.
and....
6. A Republican-controlled government that took a week to respond with aid to hundreds of thousands of New Orleans residents who were displaced by flood waters brought on by Hurricane Katrina.
And after all of that - after all of that disaster, corruption, ineptitude and incapability - what do the masses do merely two years after voting for an overhaul of Republican power? THEY VOTE THEM BACK INTO CONGRESS IN OVERWHELMING NUMBERS!
And that's why I've given up on this nation. I can't believe in a country that doesn't know what it wants, nor can I support a government that doesn't have my generation's best interest in mind.
I just can't do it anymore....
