"Heroes die, but they are remembered." - President Beck
I feel a very great loss. A true lifelong inspiration of mine's died yesterday afternoon - his name was Dwayne McDuffie. Yes, that Dwayne McDuffie: The creator of Static Shock and Milestone Comics.
His work and efforts at creating prominent characters of diverse backgrounds inspired much of my own work, up to and including, one specific character of my very own making. I could even argue that through much of his own writing, I was - in part - inspired to become a writer myself. His work on the "Justice League" animated series, especially, sparked my interest in the characters of DC Comics to an entirely new level when I was around the age of nine.
I recall my father cutting an article out of a TV Guide for me once about a week before the pilot episode of "Justice League" premiered on Cartoon Network. In it, Mr. McDuffie spoke about the reasons why he chose to use the Jon Stewart version of the Green Lantern character on the show instead of the traditional Hal Jordan incarnation, and low and behold: That decision of his added one of the most highly-praised angles in animation history - even propelling the character of Jon Stewart into the mainstream of modern DC Comics canon by finally inducting him into the Justice League's main roster shortly after McDuffie took over the title in late 2006.
I grew up with McDuffie's "Static Shock" cartoon. I grew up with McDuffie's writing. He inspired me in ways that I can't even write here on this mere blog page and I regret never being able to meet him when he was alive. He will be missed....
