Abused Power.

"Those who have power are afraid to lose it." - Emperor Palpatine

This is how they program people: Transference. Base a character off of someone in an obvious manner, give the character some traits and flaws which the person in real life never exhibited, and in doing so you'll alter or influence the perception of the person who the character in the project is based off of.

The adage that the pen is mightier than the sword is true. It's what makes writers the most powerful and dangerous people on the planet because their work is everlasting and it can influence general perception for as long as it's available.
